There have been two or three PUFIs visiting our feeders daily now since
the fourth week in December, but this morning we had 6 (two male and four
female). What a treat! They fare well with the competition (about 15-20
HOFI & AMGOs); they agressively feed and defensesively stay put when the
other birds try to muscle their way in. They favor black oil sunflowers
from the tube feeder that is open (w/ no squirrel guard), but sometimes
also use one of the other two tube feeders (w/ squirrel guards) when their
favorite is unavailable -- usually when the "hoodlums" are in town (RWBL,
BRCO and COGR). The hoodlums also favor the tube feeder w/ no guard.
I really enjoy the Purple Finches and hope they have a great year in 2006.
Cheers-
