Over time, this online listing service sponsored by Cornell Ornithology Lab, Audubon, NSF and several other venerable institutions promises to provide a lot of data to amateur birders (like myself) and also serious ornithologists.

A search of the Osprey Archives reveals that some people are aware of E-bird, but there don't seem to be any posts since E-Bird was updated and improved.
