Waterfowl numbers on bodies of water in the District of Columbia
usually pick up at this time of year, but were still on the low side
today, 2/7.
BUFFLEHEAD: 5 at Georgetown Reservoir
LESSER SCAUP: 4 at Georgetown Reservoir and hundreds near Hains
Point, mostly on the main channel of the river upstream of the 14th St. Bridge.
RUDDY DUCK: 4 at Georgetown Reservoir
RED-BREASTED MERGANSER: 1 drake in the Tidal Basin
COMMON MERGANSER: 1 drake in Washington Channel off Ft. McNair
HOODED MERGANSER: 2 drakes in the narrow channel by the LBJ Memorial Grove
The holly trees at the entrance channel between the Potomac and the
Tidal Basin were full of Robins and Cedar Waxwings, enjoying the
abundant berries. With them were at least 2 Golden-crowned Kinglets.
Earlier in the morning I had checked the Potomac above the Little
Falls Pumping Station in Montgomery County (this site is inside the
Beltway). Waterfowl were disappointingly absent. However, I noticed
for the first time a large nest over on the Virginia side. Two adult
Bald Eagles were sitting on its rim. It did not look like either one
was incubating eggs. I have posted the details to the VA-Bird list-serv.
