This afternoon there was a RED-HEADED WOODPECKER in the National
Arboretum. It was perched on a bare tree in the wooded area directly
east of the Capitol Columns. This bird appeared to have a bit of brown
left on the sides of its head, so it may be at the end of its first
year, but that may just have been an effect of backlighting.

Other interesting birds:
- Merlin (perched on a snag in the same area)
- a large flock of Field Sparrows (same area)
- Eastern Phoebe (same area)
- Red-breasted Nuthatch (Hickey Hill)
- Brown Creeper (yesterday, Hickey Hill)
- Common Mergansers (yesterday, Anacostia River)
- Eastern Bluebirds (yesterday, field diagonally across from Heart Pond)
- Cooper's Hawk (today, same field)

Good birding,

John Beetham
