Hello all. I spent the day birding by myself with exception to a brief time with Mike Burchett. We were both desperate for a Maryland Life bird, which didn't show up during the time I was there. That would be the Ruff.
Any how, I had what I consider a fantastic day. It was cold, like winter is supposed to be and the birds were out and more than active.
I started at the Ocean City Inlet around 8:30. I saw more Gannets than I have ever seen from land. 4 to 5 hundred. They were as close as 20 yards from the North Jetty. Numbers of them were right at the Green #5 marker. As the morning progressed, was when the numbers grew. One time there was a cloud of Gannets that seemed to be in a thermal. They got tighter and tighter thicker and thicker, higher and higher and then it happened. Half the flock decided to torpedo into the water at nearly the same time. One after another, it looked like something you would see in the movies. Like an aircraft bomber open up its doors and let all the bombs out. I have seen this off shore, but not to this extent. That was so cool.
The inlet itself was very busy with Gull activity. Mostly Ring-billed, some Herrings, Greater Black-backed Gulls, only a few Bonaparte's Gulls.
Many other birds of interest there were, Scoters way out, both Loons, 10+ Long-tailed Ducks, Buffleheads, Red-breasted Mergansers, 50+Brant.
Sandpipers were extremely cooperative. You could walk right up to them on the Jetties. I have some good pictures. Totals were around, 15+ Purples, 25 Turnstones, 40 American Oystercatchers.
West Ocean City pond had medium numbers of Ducks which include, 75-100 Canvasback, Finally some Gadwall are showing up again, 50+ Shovler, Green-winged Teal, Ruddy Duck, Black Duck, Mallards. I did get a couple of Black-crowned Night Herons and some Great-blues.
The Eurasian Widgeon was still at the Eagles Nest Golf Course. As was more Gadwall, Black Ducks, Shovler, American Widgeon, Mallards. There was a few Brown-headed Nuthatches in the low short pines calling too.
A quick stop into the Marina in Cambridge for a hopeful glimps of a Harlequin Duck didn't turn up the Harlequin. I did a pretty thorough search. If anyone needs great looks at Scoters, Long-tailed Duck, Scaup, or Goldeneye, this is the place to do it. The birds are so close, you could take a good picture with out a zoom lens.
I am sure I missed something, but its been a long day and I am tired.
Happy Birding.
