A single BLACK-CAPPED CHICKADEE visited the heated birdbath in my yard today Sat 2/18 in Darnestown, Montgomery County. I had been hearing a black-capped type chickadee call a few hours earlier in the day while clearing blown-down branches in yard but was unable to locate the bird and did not make a positive ID. Luckily, at 2:30 pm two chickadees alighted almost simultaneously on the edge of the birdbath side by side. The B-c had obvious extensive white on the wings, a bright white nape, and was a little larger than the accompanying Carolina. Yard bird #135.
other yard birds included:
HERMIT THRUSH at bird bath (same individual ? present for past 2 weeks)
RED-BREASTED NUTHATCH at sunflower feeder (one present since Nov.)
71 JUNCOS in single flock
84 CEDAR WAXWINGS in 2 adjoining flocks
2 BLACK VULTURES flying fast and vigorously, swooping and diving for several minutes very close to each other - courtship behavior?? |
