Yesterday my boss came in and said "I thought about you last weekend.
Guess what bird I saw in my backyard...?" He lives in Annapolis, and
since I know he is not a birder but very observant and wrong only rarely,
I replied "I guess by your excitement it was rare - was it a loon?" He
said "well I thought I knew what it was right away, but I've never seen
one before, and never heard of one being seen around here." He then told
told me it was a Snowy Owl, that was sitting on his boat! He then ran in
to get his kids and his camera, and got some pictues that he said were not
high quality but maybe good enough for me to tell. He sent them to me
last night and I just looked - his photos are excellent especially given
the low light level, and it was obviously a HY SNOW. Very cool! He said
it hung around on his boat, dock, and neighbor's dock til dark, but he has
not seen it again since Sunday.
Of course, I said "you should have called me"! Note - It may still be
around or in the vicinity, since he is often not home in the afternoon
during the same time as when he saw it on Sunday. He lives on the water
in Eastport.
