Hi all- Yesterday while I was birding at dusk (6:15) in Rock Creek, two Mallards landed in a large puddle that is near the creek. It is swampy and wet most of the year. The hen Mallard kept quacking loudly, followed by the drake. Then I saw a dark shape swoop down, and the Mallards dove under water. I couldn't tell what it was, until it perched: a Barred Owl. The ducks kept quacking and the owl dived on them again. After a few minutes, the owl flew off in search of an easier meal. The mallards departed wisely as well. It was interesting to watch the owl's hunting technique.
