At the Arboretum today, I found the RED-HEADED WOODPECKER and
RED-BREASTED NUTHATCH at their usual spots. If you go to look for the
Red-headed Woodpecker, check out the snags in the wooded patch behind
the Capitol columns. It is not always out, so if you miss it early on
your walk, it is worth checking again before you leave. The Red-breasted
Nuthatch continues in the Asian Garden. I also found a PINE WARBLER on
the east side of the Youth Garden. Oddly enough, it was on the ground.
There may have been a second, as I could hear a Pine Warbler-like song
coming from another direction as I watched the one on the ground.

Other birds: Hooded Mergansers (Beech Spring Pond), Black Vulture,
Golden-crowned Kinglet, Eastern Bluebird, Field Sparrow, and
Brown-headed Cowbird.

Good birding,

John Beetham
