For the past several weeks, a barred owl has been hooting in our yard most
nights until about 6:00 a.m. After a few silent nights, I was awakened
about 4:30 a.m. this morning by the sound of two owls hooting. I saw one of
them fly to another tree, and then the second one to a different tree.
After making closely-spaced courting calls, they flew to another tree or
trees where I couldn't see them, but their hoots seemed to be coming from
the same place. After some loud hoots and screeches, they got quiet after
5:00 a.m.
Not bad for inside the Beltway!
