At least 16 AMERICAN WOODCOCK were present Friday evening 3/10/06, intersection of River Road and Sycamore Landing Road, Montgomery County MD. I was standing in the field at the sw corner of the intersection. The calls started at 6:30 pm sharp. At one point, there were 9 woodcock in flight in view at one time (one group of five and one group of four), simultaneously at least 7 others were "peenting" on both sides of Sycamore Landing road, from the field on the north side of River Road. probably more than 2 dozen birds audible, but I am sure of 16. best woodcock display I have ever seen. 2 birds landed about 20 feet from me and another birder named Brad.
I did not see the Townsend's Warbler at Sycamore Landing last nite or this morning 3/11, I was there from about 9 to 11 am this morning.
Good birding!
