Hello All,

I posted a request to the San Diego listserv (where TOWA's winter) asking
about flight calls of the Townsend's Warbler as well as food sources they
prefer. A few of us heard a bird fly over this morning that gave a
repetitive, fast, buzzy "szree szree szree szree" and were wondering if that
may have been the bird. I didn't recognize it as anything I have heard
while birding around here. Stokes and other sources only give the song. No
responses to that yet, but one person did offer that TOWA's seem to be
attracted to suet cakes (below) and another person responded that they like
them best close to the ground. I thought I'd mention that in case anyone
wanted to put something out there to make observations easier and less
fleeting for this bird - just a thought. I'll post about flight calls and
other vocalizations if I hear anything.

Take Care,

Jay Keller,
Arlington, VA

Jay -

You are fortunate to be hosting such a bird out there.

My friend Jack Dineen, who lives in Inverness CA (about an hour
north of San Francisco in Marin County) has 10 to 12 Townsend's
Warblers coming regularly to his feeders this winter. He has hosted
2 or more for the last 6 or 7 winters, but this is by far the most.
They are making pigs of themselves on the suet feeder - I have seen
as many as 5 of them hanging on the feeder at once. Jack buys the
suet cakes with seeds or peanuts and dried fruit in them. The
warblers (he also has Orange-crowned Warblers) will also pick up
small bits of the hulled sunflower seeds that he sprinkles on the
tops of his various seed feeders.

Good luck. (I can't help you with the flight notes.)
