Fellow Ospreyers,

On April 1, Fort Smallwood Park will re-open to the public. Anne Arundel County has taken over the management of the Park from Baltimore City and is currently completing initial renovations. If you're not familiar with the Park, it is located in northern Anne Arundel County and is a prime location along the East Coast for observing spring raptor migration.

The Park will be open six days a week from 7 am to sunset and will be closed on Wednesdays. There will be an entry fee of $5 per vehicle. An annual pass may be purchased for $25 and individuals aged 60 or older may purchase a lifetime pass for $30. The pass is also good for Quiet Waters Park, Downs Park, and Kinder Park. Directions are available on the MOS website. Click on Birding Sites/Maryland/Hawks. (These directions will be revised slightly in light of the renovations; ask at the gate if you need help to find the hawkwatch.)

Until April 1, only the regular hawk counters are permitted entry into the Park. On or after April 1, please put Fort Smallwood Park on your list of places to visit! Its location at the confluence of the Patapsco River and Chesapeake Bay is scenic, historic, and features, besides the hawkwatch, a significant waterbird and passerine migration along with a good variety of resident birds. Also, new recruits to assist with tallying the raptor migration are welcomed. By the way, Fort Smallwood Park is only a quarter of a mile away from Weinberg Park, which at this time is still being frequented by a Red-headed Woodpecker.
