This morning I was quite surprised to see a Pileated Woodpecker at my suet
feeder. I have a standard sized cage suet feeder on the central post to my
wooden seed feeder (which is squirrel proof), and the PIWO was sitting in
the feeder gobbling away at the suet. Our house has a large backyard,
mostly left natural, with a few large trees, and across the street is a
small patch of woods. I have seen PIWO a few times in or near the yard in
the past 4 years, but never at the suet feeder, which is commonly visited
by Red-bellied and Downy woodpeckers, and, unfortunately starlings among
others. I thought a Pileated visiting a feeder was quite unusual, but
maybe it wouldn't be in a more wooded habitat.
