Hi Everybody,

The MOS is offering several block busting and night bird survey positions to qualified observers. These should be considered regular part-time to full-time jobs working on birds, not weekend or three-day-per-week situations. We offer travel expenses as well as salary, but cannot provide room and board. Please contact me (see contact info below) about pay rates.

Night birds:

The Maryland Ornithological Society (MOS) will be hiring field workers for the Maryland-District of Columbia Breeding Bird Atlas Project 2006 field season to survey ten square-mile atlas blocks for nocturnal birds including owls, American Woodcock, and nightjars. Applicants will employ tape playback and knowledge of the habitat preferences of the Middle Atlantic Region's night birds to search for these birds. The expected period of employment will be from 1 April to 15 August although shorter periods may be negotiated. The application deadline is 31 March 2006, although later applications, to 15 April, may be given consideration if necessary. Payment will be contingent upon receipt of data, hours, and travel mileage. Please send a resume and names of three references to Walter Ellison, MD-DC Breeding Bird Atlas Coordinator, 23460 Clarissa Rd., Chestertown, MD 21620, electronic submissions may be sent to

Block busting:

The Maryland Ornithological Society (MOS) will be hiring field workers for the Maryland-District of Columbia Breeding Bird Atlas Project 2006 field season to work in atlas blocks with low or no coverage (block busting) and to conduct 15-stop relative abundance surveys in selected atlas blocks. Applicants must be skilled at identifying birds of the Middle Atlantic Region by both sound and sight, and have a good intuitive feel for the habitat preferences of the Region's birdlife. Block busters will be paid by the block. Each ten square-mile block should receive a minimum of five and a half hours of field work. Field workers will also be assigned to do several 15-stop roadside relative abundance surveys. The expected period of employment will be from 15 May to 15 August although shorter periods may be negotiated. The application deadline is 15 April 2006.
