I was walking down Belmont Rd NW this morning near 20th Street and noticed a strange bird in an old Ash tree. I pulled out my binocs and spotted 5 CEDAR WAXWINGS, but then another bird caught my eye. I initially thought it was a Downy Woodpecker but upon closer look I noticed it had a red throat and a yellowish belly--a YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER! What a great start to an otherwise uneventful day. The only other highlight was seeing a pair of BANK SWALLOWS near the PCF-1 display at the Washington Navy Yard. They landed near me, giving me a perfect view. Lots of DOUBLE CRESTED CORMORANTS near DD-933, and on the sandbar across the river but still no sign of any neo-tropics...Cormorants are very social so a lone neo tropic would gravitate to a flock of double crested, but no luck thus far.
