I'd like to thank Tom Stock for sharing directions and his updates on
the Sligo Creek Pkwy's nesting yellow-crowned night-herons.
I stopped by this morning and saw five adults--two paired at nests
and one perched near them. As I was leaving, from the tennis court
parking area, I looked across Sligo Creek Pkwy and saw one or two
suspicious clumpy masses high in the trees up the hill, near some
houses. I wonder if these were from previous nesting attempts or from
other nesters. Unfortunately, I had to run and couldn't look into
these further.
I live near Rock Creek Park, near Beach Drive and Cedar Lane, and
suspect that yellow-crowned night-herons nested in this area last
year. A friend who lives in Garrett Park told me he saw one in the
creek last year. My wife saw one on the lawn near a stream at
Stoneridge school at Cedar Lane and 355 last spring as well. I've
seen a few distant single night-herons at Cedar and Beach and over
our neighborhood in the early a.m.s. but could not identify them
given the few seconds I saw them. If I find any yellow-crowned
night-herons around here, I'll let Ospreyers know. Has anyone else
seen yellow-crowned night-herons in this area?
