I really meant for this to go to Richard and MDOSPREY.

Re: [MDOSPREY] Boat-tailed Gracke
Common Grackles can have very long and boat-like tails. If I hadn't made
the same type of mistake, I would not have replied. Am not sure how I have
been placed as a 'high priet of Maryland birding'; priestess yes, high no
-- I just have a lot of years of experience and hard work in the birding
field and in birds of Maryland. I didn't say it wasn't possible but said
'unlikely'. Perhaps you need to accept that you too could have made a
mistake and admit that you could have made one -- I did so why are you
critizing me because of my experience and reputation in birds in general
and banding and Maryland birds particularily? Please give this some
thought as constructive comments rather than destructive as that is how
they are meant.
Cheers,
Kathy

Re: [MDOSPREY] Boat-tailed Gracke
Thanks for your input...but if I wanted someone that wasn't there try to
dispute what I saw, I would have asked in advance.
Your "very large male common grackle diagnosis" has one problem...the
TAIL!!!!
I see you are one of the "High Priests of Local Birding". "You couldn't
possibly have seen a Boat-tailed Grackle...!" What if I did, is someone
going to die?
Look at a range map the next time you prepare to pounce on the
unsuspecting. At least THREE books that I have (Kaufmann, Sibley and
Alsop/Smithsonian's Birds of North America) have them into mid-Maryland
ALL YEAR.

These birds were much more likely very large male Common Grackles. I have
been fooled myself but Boat-tailed or Great-tailed would need
documentation as either would be very unusual especially as far inland as
the Towson area.
