Another good Broad-winged Hawk flight was seen today in the Perry Hall section of Balto. Co.,
very similar to Saturday's flight. The largest kettle numbered 40+ hawks. Most of the BWs were
very high and were in groups of 5 to 10 hawks. While counting the BWs we were amazed to see 7
Bald Eagles within a ten minute period!! At least 3 of these Eagles appeared to be locals as they
turned back in a south-easterly direction after gaining great altitude at 11:50 pm. I found it
interesting that the migrating(?) Eagles were travelling in a north- westerly direction ( as were the
dozen or so high flying Loons ) as opposed to the Broad-winged Hawks which flew in a direct
northerly heading. Also counted 2 Sharp-shinned Hawks and 1 N. Harrier. All of this took place
between 11:00 am and 12:20 pm and was seen near the intersection of Harford Rd. and
Northwind Rd. in Baltimore County.
