Hi folks -

Spring is cruising along up here in Garrett County, but I'm sure we're
way behind you folks downstate. We're waiting for the serviceberry to
bloom in the higher elevations of the county, which means we'll have to
have what locals call a "sarvis snow" afterwards. Once we get that out
of the way maybe we'll see a hummingbird or an oriole. We have some
interesting saw-whet owl breeding activity going on up here, which is
exciting. My students and I will be checking our Cranesville Swamp nest
boxes tomorrow to see if any birds are nesting there.

I have a request for help: I'll be taking my students down to the DC
area/southern Maryland next Friday for a one day field trip to see
birds, reptiles, and amphibians that don't occur here or aren't as
active up here yet. The past few years we've gone to Huntley Meadows in
the morning, then on to Jug Bay in the afternoon. Last year I was
surprised to find the water level at Huntley Meadows way down from
previous years, thanks to the breakdown of the main beaver dam. If
you've been to Huntley Meadows recently, could you please let me know
the status of the water level and whether or not there are as many
critters visible from the boardwalk? Also, I'd appreciate any
suggestions for a comparable alternate site to visit down that way.
Please reply to me personally, especially since Huntley Meadows is
technically beyond the boundaries of the area covered by MDOSPREY.

Thanks in advance for your help!
