I led a small group of birders on a weekday Audubon Naturalist
Society trip this morning in Montgomery County, starting at
Pennyfield Lock. Migration was really quite slow, and (with the
exception of the Yellow-rumps) all the warblers encountered were
local breeders like Parula, Yellow-throated (heard but not seen),
Prothonotary (several seen very well), Louisiana Waterthrush, and
Common Yellowthroat. Best birds were a well seen, singing
YELLOW-THROATED VIREO, a singing first year male Orchard Oriole, and
a GREAT CRESTED FLYCATCHER. We had at least a dozen Green Herons.
Part of the group then moved out to Hughes Hollow, where we saw the
previously reported COMMON MOORHEN right away, in the company of 5
American Coot in the first impoundment on the left. Along the dike
between the two impoundments on the right we had 3 White-eyed Vireos
and a pair of Warbling Vireos. Before we left Hughes Hollow we had
splendid, extended views of a NORTHERN WATERTHRUSH that was singing loudly.
