Helen Patton and I birded in Charles County today, mostly in my 2 atlas
blocks. We started at Doncaster State Forest near Nanjemoy. We heard a
lot more birds than we saw, especially the 10 species of warbler --
Northern Parula, Yellow-rumped, Pine, Prairie, Palm, Black-and-white, Worm-
eating, Ovenbird, Common Yellowthroat, and Hooded. Other recent arrivals
included Great-crested Flycatcher and Red-eyed Vireo. A nice addition
to the atlas block was a pair of Hairy Woodpeckers.
When it started raining, we drove down to Morgantown and Allen's Fresh,
neither of which was terribly interesting. At Morgantown, there were 2
Royal Terns, 1 Forster's Tern, 2 Common Loons, and 2 American Coot. At
Allen's Fresh, there were 2 Greater Yellowlegs, 1 Solitary Sandpiper, and
1 Northern Bobwhite.
We spent the rest of the afternoon in a mostly developed atlas block north
of La Plata. The great surprise was 5 Wild Turkeys on Billingsley Rd.
between St. Patrick's drive and Middletown Rd. Also of note -- a Wood
Thrush and a brief glimpse of a hummingbird.
