Thirteen people, led by Karen and Bill Harris, explored various trails
in Tuckahoe State Park and at nearby Adkins Arboretum during most of the day
on May 7th. Part of the group left at noon, prior to the Adkins Arboretum
visit. Though the habitat was not widely varied, the group was looking at
birds at all times, and ended with a total of 73 species - some merely
heard, but many providing very fulfilling views. Highlights:

Green Heron
Red-shouldered Hawk
Northern Bobwhite (calling, of course)
American Coot
Yellow-billed Cuckoo
Ruby-throated Hummingbird (several seen, some perching long enough for scope
views)
Eastern Wood-pewee
Acadian Flycatcher (several)
Eastern Phoebe (several at nests, one pair working hard to feed four quite
large babies)
Great Crested Flycatcher (several)
Eastern Kingbird (many)
Purple Martin
Tree Swallow
Blue-gray Gnatcatcher (several)
Wood Thrush
American Robin (one with bill heavily loaded with worms - babies must have
been near)
Gray Catbird
Northern Mockingbird
Brown Thrasher
White-eyed Vireo (several calling and some giving great views)
Red-eyed Vireo
Warblers - a fine range of species for this habitat including Northern
Parula, Yellow, Black-throated Blue, Yellow-rumped, Pine, Prairie, Palm
(western), Prothonotary (great views), Worm-eating, Ovenbird, Louisiana
Waterthrush, Common Yellowthroat, Yellow-breasted Chat (several - calling
vigorously and giving extensive close-up views at Adkins)
Scarlet Tanager
Summer Tanager
Blue Grosbeak
Indigo Bunting (including one that showed at least a couple of pure white
primaries on each wing along with a small white patch beneath the bill)
Sparrows - Chipping, Field, Song, White-throated
Brown-headed Cowbird (numerous - aggressively seeking places for eggs)
Orchard Oriole (many, and great views)
Baltimore Oriole (many, and great views).

A Montgomery County visitor, Jim Green, joined our local folks for the
morning part of the outing and contributed greatly to everyone's enjoyment.
