This month's meeting of the Prince George's Audubon
Society and the Patuxent Bird Club promises to be a
good one. Join us this Tuesday, May 9, as we meet
Fred Tutman, the Riverkeeper for the Patuxent. From
our web page:
"There is a "riverkeeper" for each of Maryland's major
rivers with surprisingly broad powers to patrol,
protect, and preserve. However, few people know about
the riverkeepers and the role they play in protecting
Maryland's rivers from pollution and other threats.
Fred Tutman is the Riverkeeper for the Patuxent River,
which covers 930 square miles of watershed and runs
for 110 miles through nearly the entire length of the
state.
"The Patuxent Riverkeeper is an advocate for
responsible action and policies to protect the river,
advocating for responsible land use practices, a
pollution free river, improved stewardship, and
maximum compliance with water quality laws. The goal
is preservation of the river’s wildlife, cultural
diversity, vitality, and history. The Riverkeeper
maintains inspections of the river, works with
citizens and governments to help resolve water quality
issues, conducts informed monitoring, fosters
statewide partnering, and promotes direct intervention
and civic organizing to advance the vision and the
reality of an improved, viable Patuxent River.

Also at this week's meeting will be the elections for
the Board of Directors of the Prince George's Audubon
Society. This program is, as always, free and open to
the public. Light refreshments will be available.
