Hi --
Not a huge amount of activity at Rock Creek this morning, we went straight to
the Maintenance Yard in case the Golden-Winged might still be around (it wasn't)
-- but the day was saved by an unbelievably cooperative SEDGE WREN, found by
Barry, which sat up for everyone (repeatedly) and allowed itself to be videoed
as well! This was a DC bird for Barry and me, and a lifer for a number of other
birders present. Clive Harris also found a LINCOLN'S SPARROW which was NOT
cooperative and flew off into the woods.
There were also a reasonable diversity of migrants, but the ever-expanding
foliage made it a bit of a "dances with warblers" day. Most birds were seen
rather than heard, though we were pleased with good views of a singing Hooded
Warbler and a cooperative Yellow-billed Cuckoo.
Warblers: Black-and-White (4), Black-throated Blue (8), Black-throated Green
(8) -- of the former birds I saw *one* of the B&Ws -- Blackburnian (1), Blackpoll (3, heard only), Blue-winged (1), Chestnut-sided (1), Hooded (2), KENTUCKY (2, heard only alas), Myrtle (~50),
Nashville (3 at least), Ovenbird (6), Palm (1, Western), Parula (2), Redstart (2), Yellow (2), Yellowthroat (5).
Other migrants: Yellow-billed Cuckoo (3), Veery (1, also several heard singing at the "ridge" - picnic area 17/18 - by birders there), Swainson's Thrush (1, first of season for us), SEDGE WREN (1), Scarlet Tanager (10), Rose-breasted Grosbeak (4), Baltimore Oriole (6), Purple Finch (1, heard only), LINCOLN'S SPARROW (1). Another birder reported his first Pewee this morning at the ridge.
Sice we didn't do the ridge there may have been other species seen/heard, as lots of birders were out today!
