This morning I went up to Little Bennett RP in Montgomery Co., hoping to see a Kentucky Warbler (a long-overdue life bird). After
locating a singing male without too much trouble, I stood in one spot on the edge of his territory - listening to him sing repeatedly from
an undisclosed location - for what seemed like a very long time. The song stopped for a few minutes, then resumed from a mass of
wild rose bushes not more than 12 feet from me. After another minute or so, the bird popped up into view, giving me several brief but
excellent looks. I was VERY pleased.
In case anyone is interested, here are specific directions: park at the intersection of Hyattstown Mill and Prescott Roads, in the
western part of the park. Cross the foot bridge and continue on the gravel path. Just past the start of the Owl Ridge and Bennett
Ridge Trails (on your right), the gravel path curves to the right. Bear to the left at this point, on an unmarked grassy woods road
(probably the continuation of Prescott Rd.). Follow this road to where it crosses the creek. The bird's territory is upstream (to the
right) about 30 yards. He was still singing vigorously when I left the area about noon.
On the way back to my car, I heard another Kentucky Warbler signing in the swampy area to the north of the intersection of the woods
road and the gravel path. I did not hear the one that was reported near the foot bridge last Saturday.
I also had a good look at a Canada Warbler near the creek. Several Parulas were singing overhead, as well.
Good birding!
