Hello,
Last night (5/24), I took advantage of the fact that the wind finally calmed down and got out for some night birding on some of my Caroline atlas blocks. On Denton SE, I was able to reproduce Barred Owl and Whip-poor-will for upgrades to Probable. They were both heard on County Farm Rd (the cutoff in the middle of the woods) and from the very end of the appropriately named Dead End Rd. By rough triangulation, I think this was the same bird from two directions, but possibly 2 Whips. On County Farm, I also added a Screech Owl, new for the block.
But the very unexpected highlight was a Virginia Rail heard on Dyer Rd in the Hobbs CE block. There is a small wet area on Dyer Rd, south of Line Rd and just north of Cranfield Rd, where the large power line cuts through. It made one sharp 'keek' call and several rather muffled gugs and grunts, but never really a complete call. Nevertheless, it was very unexpected on an inland block.
Also a good evening for mammals with 3 deer, 2 foxes (one carrying a prey item), 2 rabbits, 2 bats (red?) and a possum which stopped in the middle of the road in front of me to watch one of the deer going in the opposite direction.

Good Birding,
