A few years ago on a field trip to Bombay Hook and Pt. Mahon Road, I found a
recently deceased roadkill Short-billed Dowitcher. I grabbed a plastic grocery bag
from the floor litter in my car, picked up the bird and drove to the next meeting point
holding the dead bird out the window.
After the initial "Eeeuuww, gross" reaction, we all got to marvel at seeing the subtle
plumage colors and various field marks closer than the usual spotting scope view.
After everyone got a close look, I tossed the body back into the phragmites to return
to nature.
Re the waxwing and orchard oriole - if the Metro bus shelter was the kind with the
Plexiglass surround, they could conceivably have been window strikes. |
