The screech owl box in my backyard has shown increased activity of late, which causes us to spend hours peering through the deepening twilight.
   
  Tonight one of the parents placed itself on a nearby low branch and called softly.  Baby #1 poked his head out a number of times but thought better of the project each time.  
   
  Last year we missed fledging but did see one baby in a low tree  soon afterwards.
   
  Parent is red phase; baby appears to be gray phase.
