I was at the Rio pond from about 3:30 - 4:00 this afternoon, and the
BBWD was extremely cooperative, posing nicely for pictures. There were
several other birders there at the same time, all ogling the bird. It
mostly seems to hang out at the north end of the pond, so that's the
best place to look for it.
A lot of local people feed the waterfowl, despite signs urging them not
to. In the time I was there I watched at least four different people
throwing bread, snack mix, popcorn and even cheez doodles to the geese
and ducks. But I couldn't stop them, of course, so I took advantage of
it and got some good photos of the BBWD (no digiscoping needed, it was
only a few feet away!). It's an aggressive little bird, chasing and
pecking at geese many times its size, flying up to get first dibs on the
junk food, and generally being quite feisty.
I just got back and there were no posts this afternoon advising that the
duck was still there, so I wanted to get a message out. I'll post again
when I get the photos up.
