I spent a short while atlasing up at White's Ferry this morning. There is a colony of Great Blues on the large island south of White's Ferry. About 6 nests are visible from the ferry ramp on the Md side. While on the Va side of the river I saw a Great Egret fly into the treetops on the island, where the nests are. However I couldn't see exactly where it went since the nests aren't visible from the Va side. It emerged 5 minutes later as I was crossing back on the ferry and it flew a short distance down river.
I waited for 20 mins or so but the Great Egret did not reappear. It might just be hanging out there for the summer, but who knows? Several Double-crested Cormorants were there as well but none on nests. The Great Blues seem to be raising a good crop of youngsters.

I plan to go alongside the island in a boat some time in the next week or two to take a closer look.
