Hey everyone, it's with a mixture of sadness and excitement
that I report that my wife Frances & I have now moved from
our apartment in College Park to our new home, a house in
Laurel. Sadness because undoubtedly this means I will not
be reporting on birds along the Paint Branch Stream Valley
Park trail nearly as frequently, but excitement because
we're in a new place, with our own backyard (and a big bird
feeder!).
We're located off Brooklyn Bridge Rd in West Laurel, just
south of Rocky Gorge reservoir. Still in PG County. Any
tips for good birding spots in the area would be
appreciated! At least we're a bit closer to Patuxent
Research Refuge and Centennial Lake now, but further from
Greenbelt Lake and Lake Artemesia unfortunately.
Thanks for any suggestions!
In closing, here's a list of birds I've spotted on/from our
new property in the past month when I've had a chance to pay
attention. I'm looking forward to more careful watching!
Mourning Dove (seen at feeder)
Red-bellied Woodpecker (came to feeder once)
Downy Woodpecker
Pileated Woodpecker
Eastern Wood-Pewee
Acadian Flycatcher
Great Crested Flycatcher
Red-eyed Vireo
Blue Jay
Carolina Chickadee (at feeder)
Tufted Titmouse
White-breasted Nuthatch
Carolina Wren
House Wren (at least 1 nest; chicks now fledged)
Wood Thrush (calling from nearby woods)
American Robin
Gray Catbird
Northern Cardinal (at feeder)
Common Grackle (at feeder)
Brown-headed Cowbird
Orchard Oriole
American Goldfinch
I've seen Turkey Vultures nearby, but not from our property
(yet!).
