I have one of those strange, bald cardinals (a male) at my feeders now, too.  I have had one or two in past summers as well.  

Thanks for the links, Phil.  It is a relief to find out that they are not about to succumb to some awful disease! 

(I am also a cat owner, but I'm going to stay out of that discussion.)
