I did a little Atlasing while canoeing the Potomac River near Shepherdstown,
WV, yesterday.

Last year, at federal expense a new bridge was constructed across the river
at Rte 34. The design is apparently perfect for Cliff Swallows; a nice ledge
on which to perch and an under-hang on which to build nests.

I counted approximately 100 nests on the downstream side of the bridge, most
of which were occupied with young being fed by their parents. There were
also newly fledge young perched on the bridge wall being fed as well.

There is a good view of these nests and related activity from the Shepherd
University grounds just on the WV side of the bridge.

Also had three families of Wood Duck on the river: hens and their chicks.
