Just got back from Morgan Run (Carroll County) where I had a pair of BLUE
GROSBEAKS and some fledglings. This bird is uncommon at best up here on the
Piedmont and the first I've had at this location after many thousands of
years of wandering aimlessly around it. If any body needs this species for
some county list or something, email me privately and I will give specific
directions.
As for my ever ongoing study of the ACFL's flutter call, I heard seven
of them and observed 4. All did the hiccup. None did the flutter call.
Omitting the 3 that weren't close enough for observation, at least three of
the observed birds did fly from one spot to another. I can only conclude,
after it seems virtually every one I saw back in May and June did it, that
they stop doing it in July. I think my sample size is more than adequate and
will likely publish my findings in Science or Nature. I'm sure one of them
will jump on it. This is big stuff. Wish they had a Nobel Prize for silly
bird studies.
