I am in denial, and can remain in that state for some time, considering
there is no evidence of his demise. That being said, my friend the Catbird
has never disappeared for more than a day or two at this time of year, but I
have not seen him since a week ago Friday. Up til then he was pestering me
frequently, coming to the window and staring at me until I'd come out and
feed him. As I recall, I was playfully berating him for not letting me eat
my own dinner.

It's been six summers, a long time in a songbird's life. I really hope I'm
premature in thinking he's gone, but it just doesn't feel right, looking up
from my desk and not seeing him waiting for a handout.

So it goes.
