Lisa Shannon, John Hubbell, Paul Pisano and I, later
joined by Kevin Graff, saw and heard a/the Eurasian
Collared Dove in and near the nursery described by
Bill Hubick yesterday. We did not see it for at least
the first half hour we were there, but after I had
wandered away, they spotted it, and I did finally
manage to see it, somewhere around 8 am.

The bird flew north from the nursery and landed on the
chimney and roofs of a warehouse-type complex. It
then flew around the area, often returning to the
chimney, where I watched it deliver two series of "ku
COOO ku" calls. Finally, it flew off in the direction
of the John Deere buildings across the road, and into
the sun.

We were able to see the bird clearly from the side of
the road; the nursery wasn't open and the warehouse-y
area was surrounded by a fence. Once as it was
landing, I heard a couple of nasal calls. I was able
to see noticeable black at the base of the undertail,
contrasting with white on the rest of the tail, and
pale but not white undertail coverts.

"Ringed Turtle-Dove" Streptopelia 'risoria' (the AOU
recently reclassified it as African Collared-Dove S.
roseogrisea) shows less black on the tail, is a paler
bird overall (including the undertail coverts), has a
rolling "hoo CROO hoo" call, and a laughing
"kek-kek-kek" call.

Thank you, Bill, for posting about your discovery!!

Phil, I hope to have notes to you on this bird by the
end of the month.
