The Eurasian Collared-Dove was present at the Stadler nursery today around
10:00 to 11:00 AM. Since I saw someone using a scope inside the nursery, I
pulled in rather than start along the road. The bird was in a large tree on
the north side of the nursery and would have been visible from the road.
After a few minutes it flew towards the furniture company next-door to the
north. The nursery personnel are very hospitable to birders and they have a
nice collection of plants in very good condition, especially considering the
season. (I purchased a very fresh hosta.) After looking around about a
half-hour, I noticed the dove flew back to the same area as before. The
nursery folks told me the furniture company does NOT want birders going into
their property. After the bird left again, I looked a little around the
furniture company roofs and trees - from the road, and across the road, as
suggested by Phil Davis, but did not see it. However I did not look too hard
since I already had good looks at it.
A reporter from the Frederick News-Post was there so there may be an article
about the bird within a few days - possibly online. He was amazed that
anyone would come all the way from Randallstown (about 45 miles!!!) to see a
bird.
The nursery and vicinity are very easy to get to: from I-70 in Frederick go
about 3 miles west on 340 and exit north (right) on Mt Zion Rd. The nursery
is on the left in about 1/4 mile. (There were about 5 empty cars parked
along the road right near the exit that were suggestive of a group of
birders, but I assume were not.)
