Hello,
The past couple of Sundays have felt more like fall so I have gotten out in hopes of finding some early fall migrants (thinking in particular of yellow Warbler). On 8/5, the weather felt good, but the birds were more like the late summer doldrums. No migrants, some silly misses and the occasional singing bird. The highlight was a squadron of 29 Great Egrets that flew over the farm (both states), by far a high count. A Wood Thrush singing this late in the season was unusual.
On 8/13, things at least acted more like fall mixed feeding flocks with a couple migrants mixed in. The new arrival for the year was a House Wren. This was my first August record and my previous early fall date was 9/5. So early that in counts as a new atlas tick. Other migrants were 2 Redstarts, a female Summer Tanager (another August first), a female Orchard Oriole, an immature Baltimore Oriole, 2 Blue-Gray Gnatcatchers, 2 Prairie Warblers). Several family groups of Carolina Wren, Bluebird, Cardinal and one of Kingbird were out and about. And I got late atlas ticks for a Yellow-billed Cuckoo carrying food and a Red-eyed Vireo with a begging Cowbird in tow. Also had a Bald Eagle in a kettle of vultures which was another August first. Bob, for the record, all of these were in MD with 1 redstart and 1 BG Gnat
Over the weekend, my 2 year old daughter Tori was helping (supervising?) me do yard work. A Pileated Woodpecker called from across the road. I asked Tori if she heard that. She says yes. I told her that was a Pileated Woodpecker. She says "an Ivory-billed?" (One of the Little Einsteins shows on Disney does include an Ivory-billed WP). I smiled with pride and told her, "no, that was a Pileated Woodpecker" and got her to say pileated. A little while later, it called again and we went through the same discussion again. Somewhere during the day, I tried to point out a Turkey Vulture, hoping to teach her that bird. It hasn't stuck yet, but a couple days later we were having turkey for dinner and Tori asks for "more turkey vulture please".
Good Birding,
