Do hummingbirds mate at this time of the year? 
At our feeder this afternoon we had a pair dancing - not your usual 
aggressive "get out of my yard" but a beautifully choreographed pas de 
deux. We saw no actual mating behavior but they flew within inches of 
each other and rose together. They were later joined by a second female 
and the dance continued.
These are the same birds who regularly come to tell us if the feeder is 
empty - staring in the window or buzzing a person sitting on a patio 
chair.  It's hard not to think this is purposeful.
