saw a MISSISSIPPI KITE in Darnestown, Montgomery County MD today at 3:30 pm.
at the intersection of Springfield Road and Seneca Road (MD Rte 112). It
was flying southwest, then banked and circled once, then flew in a leisurely
figure 8, then appeared to go for an insect (dragonfly? a number were in the
air at the time), before heading north. I watched it for approximately 3
minutes. First one I have ever seen in the county. - Don Simonson, Darnestown md
Hi all,
I just got home and picked up a phone message from the machine stating that
the caller had seen an adult MISSISSIPPI KITE at the Cabin John Regional
Park off Westlake Blvd., from near the powerline cut behind the ballfields area,
at approx. 7:30 this morning. The observer (James Swanson) indicated that he
thought the bird was perhaps perched on one of the power poles and that he
spooked it into flight when he walked into the power line area.
He said also that he only watched it briefly before it flew off heading
south. He said it was OK for me to give his phone number out here but that he
might not be around to answer calls tomorrow, and he might go back in the early
AM to look for it again.
His number for those interested in trying to chase this county rarity, is
301-928-9171.
Good luck!
