Hoping to find a Connecticut Warbler or some such treasure, I took a walk
to the National Mall and kept an eye on the bushes around the DC WWI
Veterans Memorial. Alas, no such luck, though I did turn up a Brown
Thrasher, a Swainson's Thrush, and a Common Yellowthroat (the only warbler
I found on the whole walk).
But the best bird by far came when I looked up to the trees--and found an
immature RED-HEADED WOODPECKER, certainly a Mall first for me.

PS: In case this is of interest to anyone on the list, or if anyone on the
list knows of someone who might care, for at least the last two days the
flock of Canada Geese at the Constitution Gardens pond has included one
with a big orange neckband that says "H2M7." |
