Not surprisingly, given the weather change, it looks like a great morning
out there. I stayed close to home and birded Ft. Bayard Park and found a
nice combination of mid-fall migrants and the first appearances of some of
our "winter" birds.
The nod for best bird has to go to the NASHVILLE WARBLER, mainly because it
was the most cooperative one I've ever seen, foraging at close range and
near eye level for several minutes. Other warblers present were
BLACK-THROATED GREEN and PINE.
In the late fall/"winter" category, I had two YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKERS and
a fine showing from the kinglets, with my first three GOLDEN-CROWNED of the
fall, plus at least two RUBY-CROWNED.
Wrapping up the other birds of note:
Canada Goose (two flyover flocks totalling around 45)
Chimney Swift (4)
Eastern Phoebe (not a very common bird in the park)
Blue-headed Vireo
Scarlet Tanager
A total of 25 species, which is a very good day for Ft. Bayard. It'd be 26
if I could have ID'ed a flyover hawk, which I strongly suspect was a
Broad-wing.
