Today I watched a mature Bald Eagle spin and crash into the water like a
plane that had one of its wings shot off, or a Maple seed. I only saw the
last 30 feet of the descent. People theorize that perhaps it hit the power
line, and I think that is a good hypothesis. It floated downstream past the
island and was able to get up on a rocky sandbar downstream. And it flopped
back into the water. DNR launched a boat there, and the officer rescued it.
I hope it is OK, A Wildlife Rescue person, sorry I do not know her name,
took it to Gerda Deterer's Rehab Center in Hampstead, MD. This took hours,
and I hope the bird is OK. I think that water had to be cold, it was in it
for a long time. One wonders about hypothermia, that sort of thing.
