Hello Everyone,

I did a brief driving tour of a few spots just south of DC along the Potomac
River today. Some of the highlights are as follows:

LBJ Grove - 1 adult BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT HERON sitting on an object in the
water, and another juvenile sitting in a tree on the Virginia side. Both
spooked and flew toward the Pentagon when an adult PEREGRINE FALCON made a
pass through the area.

Roaches Run Waterfowl Sanctuary - 1 first-year BALD EAGLE flying just over
water, confirming that no ducks were around since nothing picked up when it
arrived! One latish OSPREY circling overhead. 2 PIED-BILLED GREBES.

Gravelly Point - 1 juvenile WHITE-CROWNED SPARROW and 1 SAVANNAH SPARROW
near the fenceline in the vegetation, among a baker's dozen Song Sparrows.
2 RC KINGLETS. 1 adult PEREGRINE FALCON (same?) glides about 15 feet over
my head near water's edge. 1 MERLIN flaps overhead.

Additionally, one of the Ring-billeds was slightly smaller, stockier than
the others. It had a petite yellow bill and extensive white in the tips of
the primaries. However, there was very little nape streaking and had a
fairly defined (but thin) bill ring. I saw it at a distance of about 25
feet a couple of times and noticed yellow eyes. It had me going for a
minute until I got a good look...

These spots are a nice way to share birding with family / young children.

Take Care,
