This afternoon Dave Harvey and I went to NE Frederick County to look for the Northern Shrike. Searching was unnecessary as Marcia Balestri was there watching the bird. It was in the second hedgerow east of Shriver Road. A minute later it flew to the first hedgerow and perched in a treetop allowing wonderful telescope views. A few minutes later it flew across the road and landed in the big tree next to the farm house with the blue tarp covering the porch. We lost sight of it when it left that spot. The directions the same as Jim Wilkinson reported.
This bird is browner than most immature Northern Shrikes I have seen, closer to the juvenile plumage shown in the National Geographic guide rather than the immature. Sibley does not show an intermediate plumage but illustrates the brown plumage as running from summer to next spring.
