Late Saturday afternoon (circa 1630 EST), 18 November, the Great White
Heron was perched on the pier at Governor Run (south of Scientists'
Cliffs, Calvert County). I first spotted it from South Beach,
Scientists' Cliffs, while scoping the gulls roosting on the pier. While
I walked south for a better look, it moved from the pier to the nearby
shore, where it was hunting along the rocks placed to protect the beach.
It then flew back north to the southernmost Scientists' Cliffs groyne.
It was still perched along that wooden structure, watching the water and
occasionally moving about, when I returned north along the beach. I
spent some ten or minutes on the beach at the base of the groyne
watching it hunt, at distances down to under 10 m.
