Hi All,
We had to go pick up Ian from a visit with a friend before heading home
from the MOS Board Meeting at Washington College. This included a quick
stop at Great Oak Pond. Just the usual suspects there, lots of Ruddies,
Canada Geese, and a spectacular flock of 15,000 grackles.
Upon our return home I was out on the back porch bringing in some of the
bags of refreshments and trays from the meeting when I heard the yelping
of a Snow Goose flock. As I watched the geese pass by I noticed a large
dark raptor out of the corner of my eye directly overhead. It was
gliding with its wings tucked (much like a migrating red-tail). It was
very big, we often see Bald Eagles over the house, but this eagle only
showed pale at the base of the primaries. I shouted for Nancy to come
out to look at the young GOLDEN EAGLE. It dallied in a thermal for about
three minutes allowing a great look at the white blazes in its wings,
and the sharp dark band on its white tail. As we watched, a Common Loon
passed behind it. I wondered if we were going to get another new yard
bird this year; I have been hoping for this one for a long time.
Good birding,
