The 8th annual C&O Canal Mid-winter Bird Survey been posted on the DC
Audubon web site:

The survey, which breaks reports into each mile, was completed on Saturday,
January 21, 2006. This bird survey aims to determine and monitor the winter
bird population along the C&O Canal National Historical Park. The canal
stretches 184.5 miles, from its eastern terminus in Georgetown to its
western terminus in Cumberland, Maryland. 57 volunteer observers recorded
74 species of birds and a total of 12,718 individuals. Some of the
highlights include: The sector with the greatest species diversity was Mile
20, where observers reported 40 species; a Red-necked Grebe was observed at
mile 97; and the number of Canada Geese was down considerably from the
previous years.
