Dear Ospreyers,

I'm posting this for a friend of mine, Vince Burke. Vince knows his birds but does not subscribe to the list.

On Tuesday 12/12/06 while riding on Ritchie Highway north of 695 near
Seward Avenue experienced birder Vincent Burke observed a group of 50
American Crows in a large tree along the road and one crow with a white
breast, later identified as likely being a Pied Crow, a species native
to Africa. The suspected Pied Crow was only seen from below, but at
close range, about 50 feet away. The American Crows were mobbing the
suspected Pied Crow and when it finally flew from the tree it was
pursued by three American crows and attacked. He called the Maryland
Zoo in Baltimore to see if a Pied Crow had escaped, but they do not house
this species. Pied Crows are kept as pets, so he suspects the bird
likely escaped. Has anyone else heard reports of a Pied Crow in
Baltimore?
